Curiosidades Culturales: El Día de Muertos - Cultural Tip: Day of the Dead

Today we'll have a look at this special tradition in Mexico that is very popular and well known around the world. It's considered to be the Latin version of Halloween. El Día de los Muertos is celebrated between el 31 de octubre y el dos de noviembre en México. It is a public holiday when families gather to remember friends and family members who passed away. Contrary to what some may think, this is not a sad or gloomy event and Mexicans celebrate it with joy and happiness.

It is believed that the spirit of the dead come down to earth to pay a visit to their families. Mexicans make beautifully elaborated altars in their houses to greet them. They would offer them their preferred meals and drinks, and also their favourite possessions, such as books, musical instruments or clothing. During the day, they have a feast and drink remembering those that are gone and telling funny stories that they lived with them.

Families also visit the graves of their beloved ones covering them with lots of flowers and candles. People stay late in the cemeteries socialising and the streets nearby cemeteries are filled with music, parades, colours, and candy skulls and skeletons.

It is a truly beautiful experience and a unique celebration full of bright colours. Just another excellent excuse to visit México!
